Located in Ikot Abasi in Akwa Ibom State, the Bridge of No Return was so named by the locals because any slave that passed never returned.
Built in 1795, the bridge was the last point of discharge of slaves into boats that transported them into waiting ships that eventually sailed them into slavery. Alongside other relics of the slave trade littered in the vicinity, the bridge of no return paints a gruesome picture of the harrowing experience our forebears suffered in the hands of slave traders. It is an existing remainder of the horrors of the Slave Trade era. It’s about one hour drive from the city centre of Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.
