On January 1, 1914, Lord Frederick Lugard, the then Governor-General of both the Northern Protectorate and Southern Protectorate made a proclamation to merge the two Protectorates into one entity called Nigeria.

There has been a lot of misinformation about where this historic event took place. But history has it that Lord Lugard spent most of his time in Opobo Province (now Ikot Abasi Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State). History also has it that his wife, Lady Flora Shaw was with him in Ikot Abasi when she conceived the name Nigeria.

Trace the footsteps of Lord Lugard as you explore every inch of this historical site including his office (insert) and you will be enthralled by the relics from the past, including the megaphone he used. Ikot Abasi is about one hour drive from the city centre of Uyo the capital of Akwa Ibom State.
